Kevin's Thoughts...
Virgin Voyages is a brand new cruise line, they had done a couple of preview cruises, and then.... Covid hit and shut it all down. While their timing was terrible, some have said it was a good thing for them. Like all brand new products, that are out to break all the rules, there were some notable issues during the previews. With the shutdown, they had the opportunity to launch again, making some tweaks to the offerings.
Virgin Voyages is billed as a new way to cruise, a luxury resort that happens to be on the ocean. The current plans call for 4 ships, all identical in build, but differently styled. These are very modern ships in every way possible. They use a bracelet/fob for a room key, and all that a room key would do for you. They are heavy into apps and technology. From the dedicated app to make all of your reservations, to a tablet in each room that allows you to set the scene for lighting and more.
When stripped back the ships are ships, 110,000 tons making them large sized, but only having 2700 passengers, which is a low number for that sized ship. The theme/finish of the ships is definitely modern... in every way. Bright colors, neon, minimalist styling, very harsh contrasts. It may not be for everyone, but they do commit to that style everywhere.
The experience is supposed to break all the rules, and in many ways it does. In many other ways it is just a mix of features that others have, but taken up a notch. While some of the features are just traditional offerings, rebranded. Virgin Voyages is an adults only cruise line, 18+. There are no buffets, but there is an area where there are several eateries all clustered together (described as a collection of food stands, and food trucks). While that food is made to order, it is almost a buffet.
Cost.... Virgin Voyages is a luxury level product. However, they have set up things to make it more convenient, and even less expensive. Gratuities are included in all prices (including the cruise fare). Drink prices are reasonable, and there is less out of pocket expenses while on the cruise.
Time will tell how this all works together as a package, and certainly things will be adjusted as needed. Current plans are for the ships to homeport in Miami and Barcelona.
Virgin Voyages has run several promotions, but as a brand new cruise line, there is no way to predict how long they will be running promotions. Being new, and having limited capacity due to only having 2 ships promotions were not expected to have been needed. Time will tell how it will play out, and if we can find you a promotion, then definitely grab it rather than waiting for something better... there is no saying if there will be another promotion again.
