Kevin's Thoughts...
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is the 3rd of the major mass market cruises. They work hard to offer an alternative and innovative experience to separate themselves from Carnival and Royal Caribbean. The ships are big, and modern. They offer features for all ages. You can easily stay busy all day long if you want... or of course, you can also just lounge quietly if you prefer.
NCL ships are going to have people of all ages, with plenty of kids. The kids club offerings are great, and broken up by age. Plus, with the pools, the shows, the slides, and the go-karts... kids will have no problems staying as active as they want.
The ships are large, and full of amenities. They tend to be crowded in some places, and the rooms also tend to be longer than other lines, but narrower, while still being similar in overall size.. The ships are clean, and nice. One particular feature I like is to look at the carpet on most ships... the fish are swimming towards the front of the ship. So it's easy to tell which way to go to get wherever you want. Each ship pushed the limits when it was built, and the older ships are well maintained and have aged well. NCL ships are known by their unique hull art. You can easily spot an NCL ship from the way the bow is decorated.
NCL promotions can be a good deal. The primary concern with NCL is that when they include a drink package (or dining package) in their promotion, there is an additional charge of 20% of the value of that package. So NCL provides the package free, but the tips (service fee) on that package is added to the cost of the cruise. This makes the advertised price of the cruise appear much lower than the actual cost. As with all "package" prices, the amount of value you will receive from the items included really makes the difference as to if it's a good value for you. We can work with you to make sure you don't over buy. "All-4" offers are common, with a dining package, drink package, wifi and a shore excursion credit included. Occasionally there are also fly free or discounted offers. Again, these are not always the best deal, but we can help you decide if its a good value for you!
NCL sailings have an emphasis on the the Caribbean, and they have put a lot of resources into Alaska as well. There are additional options in the Mediterranean. They tend to sail from the New York City area year round as well. The NCL Pride of America is unique in that it is the only major US flagged cruise ship, and exclusively does circle tours of Hawaii.
