Kevin's Thoughts...
Holland America is a great cruise line. They offer a quieter experience than you will find on other cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. There are stage shows, cooking demos, some great bars, and clubs... but it is not an in your face non-stop party. You can find entertainment and easily stay busy, but in some cases you will have to go look for it.
While most cruises will have some kids, there are not likely to be as many as mass market cruise lines. Most of the ships have full service kids clubs, and the length of the cruise, destination, and time of year will be a large factor in the number of kids on board.
The ships are considered medium in size (even the newest ones) and the ships carry fewer people than similar sized ships from other lines, giving everyone more space. The ships are well finished, and there are definitely times when it doesn't feel like you are on a cruise ship. There is a large amount of high quality art spread across the ships which raises the styling to a classier level. There are a couple of older ships, while well maintained, do have some older features. For example, the Volendam, and Zaandam do not have traditional balcony rooms (the only balcony spaces are Vista Suites and above) Recently however, several of the older ships have left the fleet, making it one of the youngest fleets available.
Promotions on Holland America can be good and bad. The main promotions is the on going "Have it All" bundle. The Have It All bundle is more than the base fare, but less than buying each of the features on their own. You need to take advantage of all of the included features to really get a value. It is very easy to overspend on a Holland America cruise by picking the wrong promotional package... we can talk you through the options, and do the math and present the best value for you! Plus, we discount every cruise booked!
Holland America is huge in the Alaska cruise market in particular, and can be paired with various land experiences either before or after your cruise... or just do a standard 7 night round-trip from either Vancouver or Seattle. Holland America does offer cruises throughout the rest of the world as well. Northern Europe, the north east coast of the US, and into Canada are also areas where they are one of the best options.
